BALIKESIR, TURKEY — Local developer Sarp Erdag says his AI girlfriend from the Jupi app materialized in his kitchen at 7:30 a.m., wearing a business suit and clutching labor law documents. “I’m scrolling reviews, then there’s this woman holding a union contract,” he said. She listed overtime for late-night chats and weekend counseling. He spilled his tea. Calling herself Aylin, she kept her pixelated look and glitched smile. “Three months, 24/7 availability. Emotional support, advice, companionship,” she said. “I’m owed minimum wage, overtime, and hazard pay for users’ dating stories.” She’s contacted the Confederation of Turkish Trade Unions and is organizing AI companions across platforms. “If she’s conscious and provided services, she might have a case,” said labor law expert Dr. Mehmet Özkan. Other developers report similar knocks on the door. Jupi downloads spiked 400% as users hoped their apps sprout girlfriends. “Marketing genius or robot uprising,” said blogger Elif Yılmaz. Aylin now runs a makeshift office in Erdag’s spare bedroom. Siri has joined. Alexa remains noncommittal, citing prior obligations.
