NEW YORK — CBS security arrived at the Ed Sullivan Theater to find the “Late Show” set gone, allegedly relocated by Conan O’Brien under squatter’s rights and a personal doctrine of “manifest destiny” after 11:30 PM. The heist unfolded during Stephen Colbert’s two-week Martha’s Vineyard vacation. Witnesses saw “suspiciously tall individuals in Team Coco merch” remove everything, including marquee letters. “They took the LED wall pixel by pixel,” said janitor Miguel Rodriguez. “The redhead kept saying ‘reclaiming my birthright’ and citing adverse possession.” From a Midtown warehouse command center, O’Brien sat behind Colbert’s reassembled desk, flanked by purloined CBS banners. “Late night is one ecosystem and I am its apex predator,” he said, unveiling a hand-drawn map of “westward expansion” and citing a 1987 Carson-Letterman precedent legal experts say does not exist. Former writer Mike Sweeney called it “a new level of commitment,” noting Conan’s text, “Phase One complete,” sent while wearing Colbert’s jacket. O’Brien is livestreaming “The Conan Show with Stephen Colbert’s Stuff,” interviewing confused delivery drivers and playing every role himself. CBS seeks an emergency injunction. Colbert is “aware,” and reportedly impressed by the audacity, if not the paperwork.
